  • Ovarian Stimulation: Like IVF, the first step in ICSI is ovarian stimulation. The woman takes hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. These eggs are monitored through ultrasounds and blood tests to track their development.

  • Egg Retrieval (Aspiration): Once the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure is performed to retrieve the eggs from the ovaries. This is done under sedation or anesthesia, and a thin needle is used to aspirate the eggs from the ovaries.

  • Sperm Collection: A sperm sample is collected from the male partner (or sperm donor). The sperm is then processed in the laboratory to isolate the healthiest and most viable sperm.

  • Sperm Injection: In the ICSI procedure, a single sperm is carefully selected under a microscope. Using a fine needle, the sperm is injected directly into the egg’s cytoplasm. This step bypasses any potential issues with sperm motility or morphology.

  • Fertilization and Embryo Culture: After injection, the fertilized eggs are cultured in the laboratory for a few days. The embryos are monitored for growth and development. The embryologist will select the best-quality embryos for transfer into the woman’s uterus.

  • Embryo Transfer: Once the embryos are ready, one or more embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus. This is a relatively simple and painless procedure that requires no anesthesia.
